Transition

We believe that transition to high school should be an exciting time for children

The transition process

At Wetherby High School we work really hard to make the process smooth and enjoyable. The transition starts months before students join us in September.

Our Coaching programme, which consists of a group of around 11 students from across the year groups with a dedicated member of staff, called the coach, allows students to build strong relationships quickly and have their own school family. Coaching groups meet 3 times a week for an extended period of time on a Monday, a Wednesday and a Friday. Coachees also know they can seek out the support of their coach at any time during the week. This means coaches can move beyond supporting your child with the basics of equipment to more important elements of providing students with the social and emotional support they need to settle in and develop as young people.

We undertake an extensive transition programme during the summer term. Our Year Manager for Year 7 visits each child at their Primary School to introduce themselves, share information about WHS and to learn about each child from their teacher.

Children also have up to 5 opportunities to visit WHS during the summer term, including a 4-day summer holiday transition club. When at WHS, the children meet their coach and other key adults that will support them in their transition. As a parent/carer, you will also meet your child’s coach in the summer term to begin to build a relationship between home and school before they start with us.

The relationship between home and school is fundamental to your child’s success. Your child’s coach is your first port of call for any support needed and they are available throughout the week through phone calls and emails. There are also three Meet Your Coach Days across the school year, where you can meet in person. This is in addition to the usual Parent/Carer Evenings.

Our relationship-led approach means we prioritise building relationships between staff and students and between students and students. These relationships are crucial for supporting students with the transition to WHS.

We are a close-knit school where each child is known and valued for what they contribute to the community.

Life at Wetherby High School

TRANSPORT

Children travel to Wetherby High School by walking, cycling, car and buses. We have staff at the front of school at the beginning and end of each day to meet and greet students and to ensure the transitions run smoothly.

The school operates 5 buses each day. These are WH11, WH12, WH13, WH14 and WH15. Current bus routes can be found on the Metro website, however these change each year to meet the needs of the students attending school.

PROSPECTUS

Our prospectus highlights the restorative and inclusive way that we work.

We welcome you to take a read through this booklet and learn more about our school.

FLEXIBLE LEARNING

We offer a range of clubs and activities for students to take part in during lunchtime and after school. These Flexible Learning clubs give students the opportunity to try a new skill whilst making friends.

Flexible Learning also encompasses academic intervention during time away from school, ensuring students have many chances to pursue what they enjoy and what they need to achieve.

Learn more about Flexible Learning.

LIFE LEARNING

We are aware that for some children it presents a challenge to stay after school to attend clubs. We therefore have a dedicated timetabled Endeavour session each week where every child attends an enrichment activity of their choice. The list of activities for children to choose from is extensive. Please click here to read more.

We are also committed to every student having access to wider enrichment experiences. We provide a range of experiences during a student’s time with us, including residential trips, theatre, musical and sporting events, trips to museums and the beach and careers trips such as visits to universities.

COACHING & THE HOUSE SYSTEM

The Coaching Programme at Wetherby High School is fundamental to ‘knowing our children well’ and in forming the strong relationships that are crucial for our school community.

Our Coaching groups have approximately ten students (coachees) and one member of staff (coach). The groups are ‘vertical’ meaning they consist of coachees from Year 7 to Year 11.

Each Coaching group includes students and a member of staff from the same House.

CURRICULUM

We work hard to ensure the subjects we teach match the interests of our students.

Frequently asked questions

We understand that starting a new school can bring about questions. Click here to see the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions.

The school operates five buses each school day – the WH11, WH12, WH13, WH14 and WH15. For information about bus routes and times please visit www.wymetro.com/schools.

The bus routes change each year dependent on the addresses of the children that attend WHS that year. This includes the possibility of additional buses being provided if children will be attending from a different area to what is currently catered for.

The normal school day starts at 9.00am on Monday and 8.40am on Tuesday-Friday. We would expect students to be on the school site by 8.50am on a Monday and 8.30am on a Tuesday-Friday. However, students are welcome earlier than that and we have breakfast available for students to purchase before school if they wish.

Students can choose to either bring packed lunches or buy lunch at school. We are a cashless school and use ParentPay. This allows parents/carers to put money on a student’s account which they can then use to buy food at school.

For more information on the food we provide and pricings, please visit our school meals page.

It is essential that students come to school with a pencil case that includes a black and green pen, a pencil, ruler, rubber, pencil sharpener, whiteboard pen, highlighter and calculator, so that they are ready and prepared for their lessons. We will provide their first green pen and whiteboard pen.

An explanation of the WHS uniform can be found on our uniform page. Uniform can be bought from APC Clothing, Kool Kidz or Uniwears, either ordered online or purchased in-store. We also have some pre-loved uniform in school that we can distribute to families.

Online Learning is our term for what you may traditionally know as ‘homework’.

Online Learning provides students with the opportunity to continue their studies at home. It is an important life skill for students to be able to manage their own time and develop their ability to work independently. Students will be able to access Online Learning that cements their understanding of key concepts and helps them to prepare effectively for future assessments. Students will be also be set work that further develops their reading skills and widens and deepens their understanding of subjects.
